Google Developing Speech-to-Speech Translation for Mobile Phones

Google is developing “speech-to-speech translation” software for the first phone capable of translating foreign languages almost instantly. The basic system is expected to be ready within a couple of years. The new technology combines machine translation technology and voice recognition technology to produce software capable of understanding a caller’s voice and translating it into a synthetic equivalent in a foreign language.   Read more @ teck.in

4G Telecom Service in India, TRAI to Start the Process Soon

J S Sarma, Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authory of India (TRAI) said that, TRAI has started consultation for the 4G (fourth generation) telecom services. TRAI would look into the various aspects, including spectrum band to be allotted for 4G service and quantum and modes of allotment to the operators. TRAI will soon issue a consultation paper that would throw various questions for the industry and other stake holders to deliberate culminating into recommendations by the TRAI.   Read more @ teck.in

Security Update for 17 Year Old Windows Bug!

Google security researcher discovered an ancient bug in Windows, which involves a utility that allows newer versions of Windows to run very old programs and exploit this utility in Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and 2008 as well as Windows Vista and Windows 7. This bug dates from the DOS era! This bug will be patched by Microsoft in its February security update for Windows. Internet Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize 2010

The Internet was nominated by the Italian version of Wired magazine, which cited its use as a tool to advance “dialogue, debate and consensus through communication” and to promote democracy. Organizers said signatories to its petition backing the nomination include 2003 peace laureate and exiled Iranian activist Shirin Ebadi, which would make it a legitimate entry.   Read more @ teck.in

The official website of Tata Consultancy Services, TCS.com, has been hacked. The homepage says “This domaine name is for sale. Please contact us for further informations. abed_uk@hotmail.com”. We have accessed the hacked website at 2:30PM, 7-Feb, in India. It is rumored that, the hackers have made changes to the DNS settings of the website. TCS is maintaining many of the government websites and this case points out the immaturity of TCS. Let us hope that, this will be an eye opener for major Indian software firms.   Read more @ teck.in

Oracle Database Vulnerable to Remote Hacking – Researcher

A computer security expert has uncovered a flaw in the Oracle Database that could let hackers remotely access sensitive information in corporate and government databases via the Internet. It allows an attacker without a user ID and password to take complete control. All firewalls become irrelevant. This is revealed at the Black Hat hacking conference in Washington.
